An Introduction to Reiki

Reiki (pronounced RAY-KEY) means universal life energy. It is a natural healing method with its roots of Japanese origin. It is a natural ,holistic method of energy work that works to clear, balance, and strengthen the energy anatomy; the pathways through which energy travels within and around the human body. These include the meridians, chakras, and the energy fields (aura). Movement of energy through these pathways helps the body in its goal of maintaining health, harmony, and balance. While Reiki does not cure illness or eliminate an injury, it helps the body create an ideal environment for healing.

Reiki is a form of energy work that was rediscovered by Mikao Usui in Japan on the mid 1800’s. It was he that named it Reiki, which stands for Rei ( universal) and Ki ( life energy). It was brought to the west in the 1930’s. It is now a well known method of energy work and is used in many health care systems.

The hand placements in a traditional Reiki treatment are designed to direct energy through the chakras and the major organs and endocrine glands they correspond with. Reiki acts synergistically with other types of healing methods. It does not conflict or interfere with other methods, but acts to support them thus enhancing results and facilitating their benefits.

Some benefits of Reiki include stress reduction and relaxation, reduction in anxiety, improved sleep, it helps with pain management, increased clarity and improved focus, and promotes health and well-being.

The Reiki principles are:

1. Just for today I will not be angry

2. Just for today I will not worry

3. Just for today I will be grateful

4. Just for today I will do my work honestly

5. Just for today I will be kind to every living thing
